You’re the likeness of God, the Author and Perfecter of your life.

Marriage exists as the doing of God,

And as the display of God.

There is no other institution like it.

Nothing even comes close to this design as a display of God,

His love, his Son, his covenant.

Nothing comes close.

Genesis 2:24,

Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother

And hold fast to his wife

And they shall become one flesh.

So, what kind of relationship is it?

How are these two people held together?

Can they walk away from this?

Can they go from spouse to spouse?

Is this relationship rooted in romance?

Is this relationship rooted in sexual desire?

Is it rooted in the need for companionship?

Is it rooted in cultural convenience?

What is this thing called one flesh that God has created?

In verse 24, the words, hold fast to his wife,

And the words, they shall become one flesh,

Point to something far deeper and more permanent,

Than occasional adultery or serial marriages.

What these words point to is marriage as a sacred covenant,

Rooted in covenant commitments

That stands against every storm as long as we both shall live.

That's only implicit here, but it is explicit in Ephesians 5.

And seeing the connection between Genesis 2:24

And Ephesians 5, 31 and 32,

Is the most revealing thing about marriage in the Bible.

Verse 31, Ephesians 5,

Therefore, a man shall leave his father and mother

And hold fast to his wife

And the two shall become one flesh.

And then in verse 32,

He gives the all-important interpretation of those words

He says this mystery is profound

And I am saying that it refers to Christ and the Church.

That's the meaning of Genesis 2:24.

The most ultimate thing that can be said about marriage

Is that it exists for God's glory.

That it exists to display God.

And now we see how marriage

Is patterned after Christ's covenant relationship to the Church.

And therefore, the highest meaning

And the most ultimate purpose of marriage,

Is to put the covenant relationship between Christ and his Church

On display in the world.

Is it not tragic how few people know this?

With the Church that he bought with his blood.

Christ entered into a covenant with the Church.

Therefore, marriage on earth is a display of the Gospel.

The glamour of suits or dresses worn.

Rather, it’s a visible display of your grace toward us.

Forgetting this, we stress over secondary things

Surrounding a wedding ceremony.

May we know simple weddings are also okay,

Because the primary thing is rejoicing in Jesus.

We don’t need to get into debt to have a beautiful wedding.

Please, Lord, keep us from a prideful heart.

Guard us from the temptation to impress men with our wedding.

Help us to have our primary focus on Jesus.

If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.

Undoubtedly, every marriage needs finances for its sustenance.

However, let’s not sacrifice our marriage in pursuit of money.

Every marriage needs finances for sustainability.

However, let’s not sacrifice our marriage in pursuit of money.

Staying apart for long periods because of work 

Is detrimental to the health of a marriage.

Over time, love and intimacy between a husband and a wife begins to wane.

Eventually, we hear so-and-so has divorced. 

Of course, the breaking of marriages is the work of Satan.

But let’s face it, in separating for several months because of work,

We let the door open for him.

The Church, through the Holy Spirit.

Of course, human marriage has limitations 

In reflecting the relationship between Christ and the Church.

But let's be real, 

Being apart for long periods because of work ruins marriages.

We let the door open for Satan.

Eventually, we hear that so-and-so cheated or got divorced.

Certainly, we have to work to pay off bills.

But my point is, let’s not do that at the expense of our marriage.

For some of us, our problem is the sin of covetousness.

We sinfully desire to live the lifestyle of our neighbor.

We fancy living in a mansion and driving expensive cars like our friends.  

In the end, our discontentment destroys our marriage.

I’m not promoting poverty or laziness.

However, may we be content with God’s blessings in each season.

Let’s ask God for wisdom over this matter.

Otherwise, marriage and distance, that’s a recipe for disaster.

The reality is that two sinners in love will always have differences. 

Nonetheless, they’ve to at least agree on fundamental views about God.

Leads to harmony in conduct and doxology.

Objectively, this level of secrecy is utter wickedness.

It’s sad that during the dating or courtship phase,

Most of us choose to pretend and hold back from being real.

We waste time flirting.

Instead of discussing serious issues as adults.

Here’s my simple advice: when you’re in a serious relationship,

When you finally find someone you want to marry,

Don’t shy away from opening up about your past life.

Don’t hide who you are.

Go ahead and share your testimony with them.

But the good news is that Jesus saved us by grace.

You know Romans 8.28,

You want to marry her because she meets all your selfish,

And he said,

What are you going to do when she's not beautiful anymore?

You see, so much of what we think is love,

Let me give you an example.

A man and a woman, they're both married, but they have an affair.

And what do they say,

We just couldn't help it. It was just love.

You know, it's bigger than both of us.

Well, what are we saying?

I mean, just think about what they're saying.

They've turned love into at least a personal or impersonal force,

That actually exists in the universe that's more powerful than people,

And can cause them to do bad things.

You see, well, I fell out of love. I'm not in love with her anymore.

I mean, you can't blame me. I'm not in love with her.

See, love went away. It left us. It abandoned us.

We've turned love into this force that can control people.

That's absolutely insane. That's not love. 

That's what comes in every movie you've ever seen

Well, it was just bigger than the both of us.

What was? Where is this power? What are you talking about?

No, it wasn't.

What was bigger than both of you, was both of your lusts.

It has nothing to do with love

Now, here's something very important about marriage.

When you marry, a couple of days after marriage, 

You're going to go, what have I done?

Here's why,

She's not going to be the person you thought she was.

She's going to have weaknesses you didn't even know about.

And let me tell you,

She's going to have weaknesses in some of the areas, 

Where you most wanted her not to have weaknesses.

According to the current school of thought, 

The best way to figure out whether you want to marry a given woman,

Is to act like the two of you are married and see if you like it.

Spend large amounts of time alone together.

Become each other's primary emotional confidants.

Share your deepest secrets and desires.

Get to know that person better than anyone else who's in your life.

Have a sexual or physical relationship that grows in intimacy and intensity,

On a track with your emotional relationship.

What we do and say in that context is private.

It's no one else's business. 

And because the relationship is private, 

We need not submit to any outside authority or even accountability.

So, you do all that.

And if this pseudo-marriage works for both of you, 

Then you get married.

If one or both of you doesn't like how it's going, then the couple breaks up.

And goes through, make no mistake about it, 

The emotional at least, and probably the physical equivalent of a divorce.

Maybe this happens with several people over the course of your single life.

Such is the process of finding the one.

If you want to simply enjoy the physical and,

Or emotional benefits of being married without the commitment, 

This is a great way to do it.

This is not the biblical picture. 

And it will unfailingly have a damaging effect on your marriage and on hers.

Whether that marriage is to one another or not.

In a biblical relationship, commitment precedes intimacy.

Starts from that Ephesians 5 model for marriage.

And works backward from there, 

Recognizing that it's that for which you are preparing.

The couple will spend a significant amount of their time

Together with other couples, or with friends.

Rather than spending all their time, or even most of their time, alone.

The topics, and manner, and frequency of speaking to one another,

Will characterize a desire to get to know each other better, 

Certainly, for the purposes of deciding whether you should be married.

So, you will get to know each other more deeply.

But not at a level or in a way that defrauds one another,

And acts as if you are married.

There will be no sexual or physical relationship at all

Outside the context of marriage.

And the couple will seek out accountability.

Seek out accountability on the spiritual health,

And progress of the relationship, 

And on their conduct regarding physical and emotional intimacy.

Under this model, both parties will be seeking 

To find out as quickly as they can, reasonably,

Whether they should be married before God.

That is, whether you can serve God better together than you can apart.

The man will be deliberate about not treating any woman like his wife, 

Who is not actually his wife.

A man will not treat anyone who is not his wife,

In a way that he would not be happy 

For another man to treat her after she is his wife.

In all these things, 

A biblical relationship looks different than relationships in the world.

And that is ultimately the point here, 

To look different than the world looks, to bring glory to God.

According to the Scriptures, 

Readiness for marriage, and the pursuit of marriage,

Should be held together.

It follows that the godly man will not commence a relationship,

In which he’s unprepared to in a godly way pursue it 

All the way to its intended trajectory.

Verse One

It’s a good desire to be married one day.

It’s not sinful to dream about doing nice, romantic things for your darling;

Wishing to be greeted by a warm hug after a long day of work;

To be told, babe, welcome home.

That’s just how the Abba, Father, made us. 

He created us to long for companionship and intimacy.

That’s the reason why we crush on people,

At times getting butterflies when we see whom we like.

But for Christians, our goal for entering into relationships 

Is different from unsaved people. 

Our main purpose is to glorify God in whatever we do.

We don’t get boyfriends and girlfriends only for romance.

Our primary aim is to praise Jesus through our relationships.

Verse Two

Before meeting the girl, you’d be interested in,

Spend time on your knees.

Ask God to help you not base your choice merely on feelings.

Equally, sister, pray earnestly that when the time comes,

You’d fall for a guy primarily because he fears Jesus.

When the time is right for us to be in love,

A secret relationship is not the norm, for we're a city on a hill.

Also, no man is an island.

Therefore, seek godly counsel in these matters from your elders,

Especially from those who look after your soul, spiritual shepherds.

May you not commence a relationship,

If you’re unprepared to pursue it in a godly way 

To its intended trajectory, namely, marriage.

May we also exercise sexual purity,

Refraining from sex before marriage.

Does this mean Christian couples don’t break up?

Do their relationships always end up in marriage? 

No, they don’t. Believers also break up.

God’s will is what’s ultimate in everything, 

Not our goals or desires.

Verse Three

Refuse instant gratification.

Yes, we’re saved. But we're still in a body.

Our flesh desires things contrary to the Spirit.

Therefore, exercise self-control.

Resist the devil, and he shall free you.

Please don’t give him a foothold.

Don’t presume you’re an angel like Gabriel.

Can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched?

Be careful what you do when alone.

Self-control 101: avoid being in isolated places with just the two of you. 

But above everything else, fear God.

Ask the Lord for grace to stay sexually pure before marriage.

Honestly, we can’t do this in our strength.

And if God wills so much that our relationship ends in marriage,

The formula for a healthy marriage remains the same, 

The cross of Jesus.

Every marriage faces challenges.

However, marriage is first and foremost a covenant,

Not an agreement based on mere feelings and emotions.

How far is too far to go sexually before marriage?

The Bible is our guide and our authority.

It does not have a single sentence somewhere that says, 

Okay, engaged couples, 

Okay, couples that are starting to date, 

Here's what you can and can't do.

And so, the way we have to approach it,

Is by putting together truths from the Bible, 

Which when they come together lead to certain conclusions.

So, let me try to put together a few of those.

Number one, sex is good. Sex is good.

1 Timothy 4:3, 

The days are coming when people are going to forbid 

To eat certain things and marriage.

Because marriage got that ugly stuff called sex in it.

And Paul says, no.

The food and the sex are created to be received with thanksgiving, 

Because they're sanctified by the word of God in prayer,

Which surprisingly, really says, good sex is for Christians.

It’s people who will give thanks for it.

Husbands and wives, give your conjugal rights, 1 Corinthians 7:3.

Only abstain from this sexual thing briefly lest Satan tempt you.

Which means, by the way, that it's not just for having babies.

It's got other deeper, personal satisfaction reasons 

That God put it in our lives.

And of course, the amazing text that all men love from Proverbs 5:19, 

Rejoice in the wife of your youth 

And let her breasts fill you with delight.

So, clearly, sexual touching is a good thing biblically

That's number one.

Number two, sex is to be enjoyed only in marriage

1 Corinthians 6:18, Flee from porneia,

That is, from fornication, from sexual immorality.

And there's a difference between porneia and moicheia.

Moicheia is adultery, and porneia is fornication.

So, there is illicit sex in marriage called adultery.

And there's illicit sex before marriage called fornication.

Don't go there, flee from it, Paul says.

Or 1 Corinthians 7:9, 

If they can't exercise self-control, they should marry.

Because this phenomenon, this wonderful thing called sex,

Is designed to be satisfied in marriage.

And one of the reasons for that, is that physical union, sexual intercourse, 

Is meant to be the physical capstone of an emotional, 

Spiritual union, in lasting covenant.

We're not animals.

Sex has roots and branches penetrating in all of our being.

And it affects all of our being.

And we've tried to abstract sex from the covenantal, 

Deep, personal, emotional, spiritual union of a man and a woman,

In our movies, and in our literature, and our advertising.

And it's wreaking havoc all over the world.

Women in particular are more holed than men in this regard.

Women are wired to want, more plainly than men, 

The holistic dimension of sexuality.

You don't want to be treated like mere animals

For men's animalistic satisfaction. They want a relationship.

They want this thing to have personal dimensions,

And covenantal, commitment dimensions.

And it's so sad to watch so many women in the media,

Be drawn by the demands of men 

Into a more animalistic way of treating sex,

Than in this holistic, personal way.

So, marriage is where God means for that beautiful, 

Whole commitment, and covenantal, deep, personal, spiritual reality, 

With a capstone of sexual intercourse to happen.

And the third observation is that mental sex is meant for marriage.

Jesus said, everyone who looks upon a woman to desire her, 

Has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Which means that doing sex in your mind, 

Looking at a woman and cultivating through some fantasy, 

A way that you get into bed with her,

Or take off her clothes, is not supposed to happen.

You're supposed to gouge out your eye.

Rather than let that happen, because that's meant for marriage.

You're supposed to have mental sex in marriage,

As well as physical sex in marriage.

So, those are the first three biblical observations.

Now, here's an experience observation to put with those 

Before we draw some conclusions.

Sexual touching is designed by God,

And experienced by most healthy people,

As prelude to sexual intercourse. That's what it's for.

It's extremely frustrating to start touching sexually,

And have to break it off as the passions become strong,

Because those touchings and that passion, 

Is meant to take you all the way.

God designed it that way.

That's why it's called foreplay for a reason.

Now, here's some implications, my big therefore.

Don't put yourself in that situation where touching is sexual,

Before you can biblically go all the way.

That is, don't put yourself in a situation,

Where there's an awakening of the desire to go further and further.

So, my principle would be,

Avoid sexually awakening, touching and kissing.

Avoid sexually awakening, touching and kissing.

They are designed as foreplay, not play.

I think to be specific, 

I think that would mean virtually, universally touching breasts,

Touching genitals, it's in that category.

Nobody, I can't imagine any normal person anyway, 

Saying, Oh, touching breasts and touching genitals, 

Is just not sexual for us. It's not going anywhere.

That's just crazy. It was designed to go somewhere.

And it's a beautiful thing if you're in the situation of marriage, 

Where it can go somewhere.

So, when the symphony is for marriage, 

The part of the symphony called prelude is for marriage.

And I would just suggest very practically,

That men and women getting into a relationship

That they think is going to be serious, 

That they talk about this with each other.

And that they decide for themselves 

How they're not going to tempt each other,

To have sexually awakening, touching and kissing.

And I would specifically tell you, 

I would plead with men here, be strong here.

And set a pure and holy pattern.

Don't make her be the one to bring it up or to put on the brakes.

Lead her in purity. She'll love you for it.

And in due time, she will give herself to you in a more complete, 

And beautiful, and whole way,

Because you've prized her enough not to use her in an unbiblical sinful way.

And I would say to the women, 

Don't entice a man to touch you,

Thinking that this is the way to keep a man.

He's not worth keeping if that's the way he's kept.

And feel free to say to any man, 

No, don't please, don't take us there.

And you can discern what kind of a man you're dealing with 

By how sensitive he is to that dimension of purity.

Blessed are the pure in heart. They will see God.

That's what we want. We want to see God.

And we want to see him in our beautiful sexual relations in marriage.

And I think married couples who have been the purest,

Also can have the sweetest and best experience of each other,

And experience of God in marriage.

One last word,

If a single person is listening to this saying, 

Oh, all very nice. I'm not married.

There's nobody on the horizon.

What am I supposed to do?

And I just want to say one thing, don't feel second class.

Jesus Christ is the most complete human being who ever lived,

And he never had sex.

Not to be married and not to have sex,

Is not to be an incomplete human being.

One can be the completest and most fruitful,

And whole human being like Jesus, without having sex.

Nonetheless, I can predict that this behavior of jumping 

From one lover to another frivolously,

Getting into rebound relationships,

Not giving ourselves time to heal after a break-up,

Putting matters into our own hands,

Will someday haunt us.

The Bible teaches that marriage is a covenant, 

A relationship between two people,

Who have no natural obligations to each other, 

But who voluntarily take on the permanent obligations,

And commitments of a family relationship to each other.

Before marriage, you've got two people who are not related.

They are not one flesh.

But in marriage, those two people voluntarily become related 

In a union that is so close, so intimate, so permanent.

That the only language that we have to describe it,

Is the language of the family, 

The language of being flesh and blood.

And it's here that we begin to see part of what it means 

That God created us in his image.

Just as Jesus Christ is united to his people 

In such a way that he is the head,

And we are his body, his flesh and blood.

So, God created us to reflect that aspect of his glory,

As we relate to one other person in a covenantal one-flesh union.

To be one flesh does not mean to become one person.

Jesus Christ and the Church remain distinct.

So, a husband and a wife remain two different people. 

But it does mean that a husband now relates to his wife,

As if she were a part of his own body,

Like my arm is a part of my body.

It means that a husband now cares for his wife 

The way he cares for his own body.

It means that a husband protects his wife 

The way he protects his own body.

And here's where the theology of sex comes in.

For if marriage is a covenant, then that covenant must have a sign.

Something that makes visible the invisible reality of this union of two people.

And that sign, the sign of the marriage covenant is sex

According to the Bible, every other woman in the world, 

A man relates to as if she were his sister or his mother, 

People that you are not sexually intimate with.

To one woman alone do you relate as your wife.

United to her in a one-flesh relationship of loyalty, of love, of intimacy.

And the sign of that unique covenantal relationship 

Between you and this one other woman,

Is the physical act of becoming one flesh in sexual intercourse.

What that means, according to the Bible, 

Is that the intimacy and the pleasure of sex,

Is not the reward that you get for getting married.

Rather, sex is the sign of the marriage covenant itself.

It's the way that you demonstrate 

That you are married to this woman and to no other.

To engage in sex, is therefore to call God as a witness,

To hold you accountable to the covenant 

That you've made with this woman.

So, regardless of whatever lesser commitments you've made

To the woman that you're dating, 

Even the commitment of engagement, 

We, Christians, need to realize that having sex outside of marriage,

Is to make a mockery of the covenant relationship 

That God has instituted in marriage, and to which he serves as witness.

Important signs of male maturity.

First of all, a personal, unaided devotion to God.

And when I say unaided, 

None of us are an island to ourselves.

There's no lone wolf Christianity.

We all need other people.

But if your Christianity only exists 

Because of the strength of your father,

The strength of your mother, or whatever,

You are not to even begin to enter into a relationship 

With someone of the opposite sex.

Please, don't do that to them.

Because, see, when you enter into that relationship, 

And you get married, you become the head.

And there's not going to be anybody there to help you.

So it must be unaided devotion to God.

Secondly, devotion to God's purpose 

In the context of the family.

You're getting married not because the girl's beautiful.

You're getting married because you believe 

That God has called you into that marriage,

To lay down your life, to bless a daughter of his, to care for her,

And to raise up a godly heritage to the Lord.

Now, another sign of maturity is this,

Knowledge and application of the Scriptures

You know the Scriptures?

You're going to have to lead a woman.

You're going to have to teach children.

You better know the Scriptures.

You see, right now, you make a foolish decision, 

And basically, you're the one who pays.

You make a foolish, unbiblical decision with your family,

You hurt your wife, you hurt your children, 

And you will be called on the carpet by God.

Men always want to talk about their headship and their authority.

Well, guess what? 

Headship and authority put you in the limelight of God's judgment.

You're responsible now for his daughter.

You're responsible for the children that he has given you.

Now, another sign of maturity is a Christ-like character.

Now, this is displayed in Galatians 5,

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, 

Patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 

Gentleness and self-control.

Men, my wife's greatest need 

Is that her husband be more like Jesus Christ.

My children's greatest need is that I be more like Jesus Christ

The whole world's greatest need 

Is that I be more like Jesus Christ.

And you can say the same thing.

Now, a Christ-like character is a pursuit 

That begins the day we're converted,

And it goes on until the day we die.

And none of us, not even the Apostle Paul, 

Is going to reach perfection.

But one thing you must do, men, 

You must be serious.

Not so much about what you do.

You must be serious about what you are.

Because what you do will flow out of who you are.

Men, we study the Scriptures, 

Not so we can fight with somebody doctrinally.

We study the Scriptures 

That we might be conformed to the image of Christ.

That's why we do it.

That's why we need the Scriptures so desperately.

And we need prayer so desperately.

It's who we are that affects those around us.

Not just what we do.

One of the greatest signs of maturity is labor.

Young man, do you delight in God honoring labor?

You were raised in a culture that does not delight in God honoring hard work.

You don't. As a matter of fact, that's the fool in your culture.

It's the cool guy who sleeps through and doesn't do anything,

But makes more money than everybody else, is the one that's to be admired.

Not in God's sight! Not in God's sight.

And not even in your grandfather's sight.

Go home and ask him if he's still alive.

Let me just give you a few things from the Scriptures.

First of all, slothfulness in the early Church 

Was considered one of the seven deadly sins.

One of the cardinal sins or capital vices,

Along with gluttony, greed, wrath, envy, and pride, and others.

It was considered slothfulness.

Laziness was considered to be a deadly or mortal sin.

Today, you look at a lot of movies and things, what goes on?

Who's the guy who ends up winning?

This guy doesn't do anything, he's just talented.

He's a bum, but then he walks out there and he gets it all done.

Look what the devil does?

Look at your culture; what it's trying to teach you?

It's not the hard-working guy.

The hard-working guy gets made fun of.

He has some Puritan ethic, he's an idiot.

He can't really produce.

He works hard and he never wins.

That is not Scripture.

Hard work and diligence are greatly honored virtues of God.

But laziness is considered a perilous and destructive device.

Have proper motives in your work.

Basically, it's this, Proverbs 23:4-5,

Do not weary yourself to gain wealth.

Cease from your consideration of it.

When you set your eyes on it, it is gone.

For wealth certainly makes itself wings like an eagle 

That flies toward the heavens.

Guys, you want to be wealthy?

You're pathetic. You're just pathetic.

If God makes you wealthy,

And he uses your wealth to feed his people,

Who are starving to death in other countries,

To help get them out of jail, things like that,

To send missionaries, praise God!

But if you want to have nice things,

You've sold your soul.

Nice things?

We're living in a war. We're getting close, 

Probably to the collapse of our own culture,

Our society, our country.

And you want to be able to buy designer stuff?

You can't get any more pathetic and triter than that.

If God makes you wealthy, praise God!

If he's given you a gift in that, praise God!

But here's the way I look at it,

You're either called to go down in the well, 

Or hold the rope for those who go down.

You're either called to be a missionary and to give your life in that.

Or you're called to send men and to help them go down.

Either way, if you're holding the rope, 

There's going to be scars on your hands.

I tell you, wealth,

Jesus talks more about wealth than probably anything.

He talks about money because it will damn a person.

He doesn't say it is difficult for a prostitute to enter the kingdom.

He doesn't say it's difficult for a corrupt politician to enter the kingdom.

He says it's difficult for a rich man to enter into the kingdom.

Because with that wealth comes everything this world can offer you.

Nice things? Who cares?

They're all going to rot.

They're all going to rot.

And here's something,

Great works are not done by men who care about wealth.

Battles are not fought and won by men,

Who want to wear frilly clothes.

So, we work, not with improper motives. But proper ones.

And that is to the glory of God.

Whatever you do, 

You work heartily as for the Lord rather than men.

Colossians 3:23 and also 1 Timothy 5:8,

But if anyone does not provide for his own,

And especially for those in his household,

He has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

So, it is for the glory of God we work,

And it is to provide for our families.

But not to provide for our families things they don't need.

Is no small task but some serious stuff. 

A real man is one who, by God's grace, resembles Jesus.

This flesh tells me to lust after random ladies passing by. 

O wretched man that I am.

Who will deliver me from this body of death?

It's a fact that Christians sometimes sin. 

It's a fact that sometimes we doubt our salvation.

How can we know that our faith is realistic?

He rose from the dead and presented himself as a sacrifice in heaven. 

All who believe in him are justified. 

They're no longer guilty of sin. 

They're sanctified. Amen!

They're not under the power of sin anymore.

Hence, sinning is not their nature. 

Although at times they sin and may doubt their salvation, 

Yet, they don’t remain in sin indefinitely because they’re in Jesus. 

Come what may, they repent.

Their salvation is secure in God. 

Amazingly, the Holy Spirit himself bears witness 

With their spirit, they’re children of God.

Sometimes, the flesh indeed troubles us.

So, let's run to Jesus, our only redeemer.

The argument that Jesus never addressed homosexuality.

People will look at this, and they'll say, 

Well, you're a Christian, which means you're a follower of Christ, right?

Well, yeah, I'm a follower of Christ.

Well, as a follower of Christ, 

It seems very strange to me that you're making a big deal

Out of something that Jesus never mentioned one time in the Gospel.

And we just don't know what to say, right?

Well, here's what you say,

Number one, Jesus did address homosexuality.

He addressed it in Matthew chapter 5 and in Matthew chapter 19.

Because in Matthew chapter 5 and Matthew chapter 19, 

He addressed the issue of marriage.

He rooted his understanding of marriage 

In the teaching in Genesis chapter 2.

The teaching in Genesis chapter 2 

That gave us marriage between a man and a woman,

For the purposes of procreation, illustration, and sanctification.

He also made it very clear that what God is joined together, 

Man cannot separate.

In other words, God is the author of marriage, not man.

Therefore, God is the one who defines marriage, not man.

Therefore, man does not have the right 

To introduce the concept of same-sex marriage.

Number one, because by definition, it's not marriage.

It's another thing.

And number two, because by definition, 

It goes against what was created in Genesis chapter 2.

So, Jesus did address homosexuality.

But there's a bigger issue here.

Jesus is a member of the Godhead.

You see, we believe in the one God,

Who has existed eternally in three persons,

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

You cannot separate Jesus from the Father and the Spirit

On the issue of homosexuality.

Jesus was there in Sodom and Gomorrah.

He was raining down fire and brimstone.

Jesus is the author of Leviticus.

So, you can't tell me that Jesus never addressed the issue of homosexuality,

Unless you're going to argue that Jesus has a different opinion 

On the issue than the Father and the Spirit.

This is hugely problematic,

Because that would mean a breach in the Trinity,

And the whole universe would cave in on itself.

Thirdly, the Bible is one story, not many.

You can no more separate Jesus from Paul, the leader,

Than you can separate Jesus from the Father, or the Spirit

The Bible is one story, not many.

What do the Apostles teach?

The apostles are whose apostles?

They are Christ's apostles.

So, the teaching that they give us,

Is the authoritative teaching of the Church 

From the Lord Jesus Christ himself.

So, again, for these three reasons,

We don't have to panic when someone says,

Well, Jesus never addressed the issue of homosexuality.

Because he did address it in Matthew 5 and Matthew 19.

Second of all, Jesus is a member of the Godhead.

You can't separate the teaching of Jesus from the teaching of his apostles.

And finally, if you take that line of argumentation,

Abortion is sometimes really framed as solely a woman's issue,

When the reality is that men, 

We bear an immense responsibility for a pregnancy.

No one's righteous. 

Even men are guilty of the sin of abortion. 

Adam was present when Satan deceived Eve.

He witnessed the entire conversation.

Unfortunately, he failed to act his role 

In guiding his wife in the law of God.

He failed to protect Eve from the old serpent. 

Hence, as the head of the wife, Adam was equally guilty.

Likewise, today, instead of loving and caring for women.

We, men, abuse them.

As a result, our wickedness pushes them to commit abortion. 

Our brutality as men is one reason 

That forces women to sometimes terminate pregnancies.

We are equally guilty.

Neglecting our God-given roles has led women into a ditch.

Some of us men have wicked hearts. 

We pressure women into getting abortions. 

But if we never wanted a child in the first place, 

Why did we indulge in the act that leads to conception?

Murdering children is purely satanic, for the devil hates children.

Remember Pharaoh in Exodus 1? Or Herod in Matthew 2? 

Both of these evil rulers killed innocent babies.

And you’re next in line if you persuade a woman 

To shed the blood of the unborn child;

And yet, Jesus Christ already shed blood on the cross.

Ours is the sin of adultery or fornication.

However, that baby in the womb is innocent of that.

Therefore, let the baby be born. 

The sin is our doing.

However, Christ will still forgive us if we repent. 

His grace will cleanse us and make us as white as snow. 

But if we don’t repent, we’ll end up in hell.

And said that your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground.

Well, if God could hear the screams of the blood of Abel, 

How much more are his ears assaulted 

By the screams of the millions of babies that we have killed?

We can't cover it.

Denial won't work.

It's too real.

Now, I have seen women, 

Who have gone through the experience of abortion, 

Who, on countless occasions, have said to me and to others,

That it wasn't such an easy trip after all, 

And that their friends who encouraged them to do it said, 

Oh, there's nothing to it, you're in, you're out, 

You know, there's no pain, and it's a quick solution 

To the pressing problems that I have 

In the light of possible scandal,

Or an alienation from my community, and so on.

But they looked at me as people who have been deceived,

And have expressed a sense of betrayal.

I didn't realize what I had done.

And when they came to themselves, 

They were so paralyzed by guilt, so destroyed by guilt,

That they wondered if there was any hope for their lives at all.

Now, my dear friends, I don't want to soft pedal this point at all,

As I said, I am profoundly convinced that abortion is not only wrong, 

It's not only a sin, it's not only evil; it's a monstrous evil.

And the commission of an act that is monstrously wicked, 

Incurs a heavy load of real guilt.

So, I'm not going to say to a person who says, 

I've had an abortion, I feel guilty.

I'm not going to say to that person, 

Hey, don't take it so seriously. It's no big deal,

You know, say a prayer, 

Do a couple of errands of charity and so on, 

And that'll take care of it.

No, this is a serious matter.

But the thing I want us to understand is 

That abortion is not the unforgivable sin.

This is what Jesus died for, to deal with that problem of guilt.

And when I say to you, what do you do with your guilt?

I don't want to just leave you wondering, 

Well, what can I do with my guilt?

I'm convinced that this is the heart of the matter.

This is why I'm a Christian.

What drove me to the cross of Christ, ladies and gentlemen, 

Was guilt and a desperate need to start over.

A desperate need to have the slate wiped clean.

I remember a passage from the Old Testament,

Where the prophet, speaking for God, says

Come, let us reason together.

If your sins are as scarlet, they shall be white as snow.

If they are as crimson, they shall be purified.

We hear the prophet announce the intent of God,

To reach down to his people who are paralyzed,

And crippled and wracked with grief over their guilt, 

That the God that is revealed in Scripture,

Is a God who is a God of passion.

He is not indifferent to evil.

He's very passionate in his rebuke and admonition against evil.

But ladies and gentlemen, he's not simply a God of passion.

Perhaps the most obvious characteristic of that God 

Is that he is a God of compassion,

A God who hears the cries of his people.

He doesn't only hear the cries of the blood 

Of those slain babies crying out to him from the ground.

He hears the cries of the mothers.

He hears the anguish and the pain of their guilt,

And he stands ready at any second to make you clean, 

To heal your soul by offering you forgiveness.

There is no more redeeming words that we could hear from God,

Than to hear God say to you,

My son, my daughter, your sins are forgiven.

But of course, there are things we have to do to experience forgiveness.

God does not just pass out forgiveness willy-nilly.

God does not just sit up in heaven and say, 

Well, boys will be boys, and girls will be girls.

No matter what they do, they're covered. I'll take care.

No, no, no. 

God commands that we turn from our evil.

God commands that we confess our evil to him.

God commands that we come to him,

And put our trust and embrace his son,

And we acknowledge that, yes, God, you have covered my guilt.

You have taken care of the problem of my guilt in the cross.

You have to repent of your sin.

You have to resolve that you will not do this again.

And you have to acknowledge your guilt to God,

And you have to humble yourself and say, 

God, please, forgive me.

I remember once when I anguished over a matter of guilt in my own life.

And so, I prayed about it. I struggled with it,

I said, God, I am sorry that I have done this.

Please forgive me. Please, let me have a fresh start.

Wipe the slate clean. Make me clean.

And I prayed and I prayed, and I didn't get relief.

So, I went to see a minister.

And the minister had me open up the New Testament,

To one of the Epistles of St. John.

And he asked me to read the verse out loud.

He said, read that verse for me, R.C.

And I said, okay,

If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us 

Of our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

And he said, did you read that?

I said yes.

And I said, well, I did pray, and I did confess, but I still feel guilty.

He said, well, then let me ask you to read another verse.

And I said, what's that verse?

He said, This verse.

And he made me read it again,

If we confess our sins,

God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins,

And to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Finally, the minister looked at me, and he said, 

R.C., how many times does God have to

say that to you before you believe it?

God has made a commitment to you,

That he stands ready to forgive you totally and completely,

If you will, come to him and humble yourself before him.

Though your sins be as scarlet,

Why live for people’s attention and likes?

Jesus died for you, and he never ceases praying for you. 

No, your value is not in HD pictures.

Unfortunately, many of us are empty inside. 

To fill that void, we post selfies for validation.

But no matter how much attention we get,

We still feel depressed.

Then you don't need to prove yourself to anybody.

Knowing that your heavenly Father loves you.

And then you can have boldness to faithfully serve him.

There’s nothing odd with taking pictures, 

Uploading them on Instagram,

And tagging your friend on Twitter.

What matters is purpose.

Honestly, it's hard staying humble when we’re the center of attention.

It’s hard not to be prideful reading people’s praises in comments. 

For others, social media leaves us depressed. 

We find ourselves comparing our lives with others.

In the process, we feel less important and get stressed.

To deal with this, we post ourselves for validation.

We feel good scrolling down the positive comments.

But the truth is, there is a matter of sin here.

What we’re witnessing is a heart affected with 

Pride, discontentment, and covetousness.

What we have here is a broken heart with issues.

However, satisfaction is in Christ alone and not in a photo.

It’s not in social media, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok.

They can't satisfy.

Unfortunately, most of us have nowhere to go.

We don't know what to do,

We desperately need peace in our hearts. 

But did you know?

There’s one solution we often overlook: Church.

The Church, a gathered people sanctified in Christ, 

Who profess his name together with their children, 

Is one precious blessing that God gave the elect.

The Church is the body of Christ, of which Christians are members. 

Read 1 Corinthians 1:2 and 1 Corinthians 12:27. 

Hence, being united to Christ's body (spiritually),

Implies being a member of a local Church. 

In other words, a real Christian should belong to a Church. 

How can you claim to be united to Christ,

If you're not united to his visible body, the Church?

Christianity is not for lone rangers.

You only trouble yourself trying to live through life alone. 

You can't fight the battle alone. 

It requires the company of brethren in Christ, a local Church. 

You won’t find tangible solutions via Google search. 

Real help is in the Church of Christ, his spiritual body. 

Unfortunately, most of us are lonely. 

We don’t belong to any spiritual body. 

Granted, we attend Church. 

But in reality, we're simply spectators. 

We give tithes and offerings,

To which the Church calls us members.

But still, there's no real unity. 

The bond with other members is superficial.  

Only a few people can claim they know us well. 

No wonder we carry our heavy burdens alone.

Because in reality, we’ve no family to come alongside us. 

Living life all by yourself is very depressing.

However, our burdens become easy if we’re part of a healthy Church.

There’s a place for a bible club, a prayer group, and therapy.

There's time to listen to a sermon on the radio or online.

A time to read Christian literature. 

However, these things cannot replace the unique role 

And the importance of a Church to the life of a Christian. 

What most of us are lacking in our lives is a healthy Church. 

Join a Church that preaches Jesus Christ and the truth of the Bible.

A Church whose worship is founded on God's Word. 

Find a Church whose pastors, elders, brothers, and sisters in Christ,

Will care for you, both physically and spiritually.
